Gary Rice has a folder full of certificates, ranging from just about every building qualification you can think of to "peripheral" skills such as welding and word processing.

But, he believes that all these papers are meaningless, because what counts most of all is the quality of the work. Just because someone has a "bit of paper" doesn't always mean that they can do the job in the real world.

The best way to assess the work of a builder is to look at the work he has already done. Failing that, references from previous customers will give you an idea of the sort of quality you can expect.
